What is assisted living in New Mexico?

Assisted living in New Mexico is a licensed residential setting for adults who need help or supervision with daily activities such as bathing, dressing, toileting, medications and meals, but who do not need continuous nursing care; the New Mexico Health Care Authority licenses every facility caring for two or more such adults under 8.370.14 NMAC.

Facilities must provide meals, housekeeping, laundry, activities and help arranging transportation, assess each resident before admission and write an individual service plan within 10 days of move-in.

Who is a good fit for assisted living in Albuquerque?

Assisted living suits someone who is no longer safe or comfortable alone at home, needs hands-on help with a few daily activities or with medications, and benefits from meals and company, but whose medical needs can be met with visiting nurses, home health or hospice rather than 24-hour nursing.

It is not the right setting for someone who needs a mechanical lift, IV therapy, a ventilator or care for advanced pressure sores, all of which New Mexico's rule treats as continuous nursing needs. Hospice residents are the exception.

How do you choose an assisted living facility in Albuquerque?

Narrow by area and size first, then on each tour ask to see the most recent posted survey report, the staffing schedule including overnight, the admission agreement's cost, refund and termination terms, and whether the facility accepts Turquoise Care Community Benefit residents if money may run short later.

Visit at mealtime, and come back unannounced in the early evening. The rule requires one awake staff person per 15 residents during waking hours; see whether that is what you find.
