In-home care vs. assisted living in Albuquerque

Staying home is what most parents want. Here is when it still makes sense, and when it stops.

Quick answer

It depends on hours. At New Mexico's 2025 median of $30 an hour, about 45 hours a week of in-home care costs roughly the same as the $5,950 monthly assisted living median, so part-time help at home is usually cheaper and round-the-clock help is usually much more expensive.

Is in-home care cheaper than assisted living in Albuquerque?

It depends on hours. At New Mexico's 2025 median of $30 an hour, about 45 hours a week of in-home care costs roughly the same as the $5,950 monthly assisted living median, so part-time help at home is usually cheaper and round-the-clock help is usually much more expensive.

Remember that staying home also means paying the mortgage or rent, utilities, food and upkeep, which assisted living includes.

When is in-home care the better choice?

In-home care works best when the need is a few hours a day, the home is safe or can be adapted, family lives nearby to cover gaps, and the person is not alone at night in a way that puts them at risk.

The Turquoise Care Community Benefit can pay personal care at home for eligible members, and the City of Albuquerque's Department of Senior Affairs offers meals, transportation and case management.

When is assisted living the better choice?

Assisted living is usually better when help is needed at unpredictable times including nights, when loneliness or poor nutrition is driving decline, when medications are being missed, or when the family caregiver is exhausted.

New Mexico's rule gives assisted living residents an assessment, a written service plan and awake staff around the clock.

How does Medicaid compare for each?

The Turquoise Care Community Benefit covers both: personal care services at home, or care services in assisted living with the resident paying room and board; Medicare covers neither ongoing in-home care nor assisted living.

Ask the ADRC at 1-800-432-2080 about eligibility and the Central Registry.

How do you decide between home care and assisted living?

Write down a typical 24 hours and mark every time help is needed; if the hours add up to more than about six a day or include nights, price out assisted living as well as home care before deciding.

Many families start with home care and move later; touring two or three facilities early makes that move easier.

What hidden costs come with staying at home in Albuquerque?

Staying home carries costs a facility rate already includes: home repairs and modifications such as grab bars or a walk-in shower, utilities and summer cooling, groceries and meal preparation, transportation to appointments, and overtime or night rates when care needs grow.

The Community Benefit can pay for some home modifications for eligible members; ask the plan's care coordinator.
